Royal Fern
Royal fern is a tall, deciduous fern which usually occurs on moist bluffs and ledges and along streams (sometimes growing in the water). Typically grows in clumps to 2-3' tall, but with constant moisture can reach 6' in height. Broad fronds have large, well-separated pinnae (leaflets) which give this fern an almost pea-family appearance. Fronds typically turn yellow to brown in autumn. Spores are located in brown, tassel-like, fertile clusters at the tips of the fronds, thus giving rise to the additional common name of flowering fern for this plant. Osmunda fiber used in the potting of orchids comes from the fibrous roots of these ferns. Excellent selection for wet areas along ponds, streams, water gardens or in bogs. Also grows well in shaded borders, woodland gardens, wild gardens or native plant gardens.

This is a non-stop bloomer from summer through frost. John Franklin roses are disease resistant and exhibit a dark green foliage. This rose is in the Explorer series.

Red Flowering Dogwood
The Red Flowering Dogwood tree, Cornus florida, 'Cherokee Chief', exhibits a moderate growth rate. The new growth is red. Red Flowering Dogwood trees have moderate resistance to mildew. The blooms are a beautiful deep lasting ruby red. Fall color is a bright scarlet. Dogwoods have a variety of landscape uses. With the year-round interest, dogwoods are excellent for specimen or accent plantings around the terrace or patio. This deciduous trees is often used with a combination of rhododendrons, azaleas and dogwoods planted in a raised bed which creates an interesting natural landscape feature. Dogwoods make excellent understory trees in a semi-shaded area and are also now being used in conjunction with typical foundation plantings and groundcovers in large beds around a building.

Mock Orange-MN Snowflake
The Minnesota Snowflake Mock Orange, Philadelphus x virginalis, is a compact, deciduous shrub that grows to only 3' tall. Features fragrant, double white flowers that bloom profusely in late spring. Flowers appear in clusters with 5-7 flowers per cluster. It has oval, dark green leaves (to 3.5" long). The common name refers to the general resemblance of the sweetly fragrant flowers of this genus to those of orange blossoms. Easily grown in average, medium wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Tolerates wide range of soils except for those that are poorly drained. Blooms on previous year's growth, so prune immediately after flowering. May be cut to the ground (also after flowering) if shrub becomes scraggly, unkempt or otherwise in need of rejuvenation.

The Lucy Rose of Sharon, Hibiscus syriacus Lucy, is an upright, deciduous shrub that is a vigorous, erect, multi-stemmed shrub that typically grows 8-12' tall. This shrub may also be trained as a single trunk tree or espalier. Leaves are diamond-shaped, dark green, slightly palmate and toothed. 'Lucy' bears double red-pink flowers from late summer until mid-fall. This plant really requires no pruning, unless you need to remove a dead or damaged branch. It has a long, early summer to fall bloom period. This cultivar is a sterile triploid that produces very few if any seed pods. It is an excellent flowering shrub that may be massed, planted in groups, or used as a specimen. The plant is very tolerant of summer heat and humidity. Larger flowers may be obtained by pruning back hard to 2-3 buds in early spring. Otherwise, prune to shape.

Shademaster Honey Locust
The Shademaster Honey Locust tree, Gleditsia triacanthos inermis, 'Shademaster'Honeylocust, may also be called sweet-locust or thorny-locust. This deciduous tree is a moderately fast growing tree commonly found on moist bottom lands or limestone soils. Because it has proven very hardy and tolerant of drought and salinity, it is widely planted for windbreaks and soil erosion control. It is a fast growing tree with good trunk. It has a more or less rectangular outline formed by the upright ascending branches which then spread horizontally. Excellent street and lawn tree bcause it is thornless and seedless. The dark green foliage turns yellow for great fall color. This variety has been planted to replace the elm in many urban areas. The leaves are fine textured, medium green in color and seldom need raking because of their fine texture.
