Dogwood - Redosier
The Redosier Dogwood, Cornus sericea, is a freely spreading shrub with many stems, 3-18' tall; branching is opposite, young stems (and most old ones) often bright, smooth, shiny red. Leaves are opposite, deciduous, oval 5-10 cm long. White threads run through the veins toewards the leaf tip. Flowers are white to greenish, small 2-4 mm across with 4 petals.; flowers are numerous in dense flat-topped clusters. Fruits are white, berry-like drupes, 7-9 mm long. This plant brightens up a winter landscape. Shade tolerant; provides cover and food for wildlife and birds. It is adapted to both wet and dry sites and a variety of soil types.

Lilac - Common purple
The Common Purple Lilac, Syringa Vulgaris, is well-known and loved by gardeners all over the world for its beauty and fragrance; one of the most powerful fragrances emitted by a plant. This deciduous shrub is used as a hedge or as an individual accent plant. It has light purple flowers occurring in clusters amid the dark-green heart-shaped leaves. This species of lilac, the purple lilac, produces suckers - new shoots that sprout from the base of the shrub, or from the roots. In North American gardens, this is a very hardy shrub. Lilacs can withstand severely cold winters (even -35 degrees C) and in fact the species does not grow well in areas without significant frost in wintertime. Captivating fragrance, gorgeous flowers.

Lapin
The Lapin Cherry fruit is large and deep purple in color with lighter red flesh. The Lapin Cherry, (la-PAHN), the french word for "rabbit", is a big, beautiful, dark red cherry. These are some of the largest, juciest cherries that grow on trees. They are great for snacking, and so big, one cherry is a mouthful! The skin is bright in appearance and it is split resistant due to flexible skin. The Lapin is an excellent pollinator and is a heavy bearer.

Spice Bush
The Spicebush, Lindera bezoin, is a native deciduous shrub with a broad, rounded habit which typically grows 6-12' high. Clusters of tiny, aromatic, greenish-yellow flowers bloom along the branches in early spring before the foliage emerges. Flowers of female plants give way to bright red drupes (to 1/2" long) which mature in fall and are attractive to birds. Female plants need a male pollinator in order to set fruit, however. Drupes are very attractive, but are largely hidden by the foliage until the leaves drop. Thick, oblong, light green leaves (to 5" long) turn an attractive yellow in autumn. Leaves are aromatic when crushed. The larva (caterpillar) of the spicebush swallowtail butterfly feeds on the leaves of this shrub. Lindera is named for the Swedish botanist, Johann Lindler. It is used for shrub borders, shade or woodland gardens, moist areas along streams or ponds, native plant gardens or naturalized plantings. They are easily grown in average, medium wet, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Fall color is best in sunny areas. Tolerates full shade, but habit becomes more open and wide-spreading.

Pignut Hickory
The Pignut Hickory tree, Carya glabra, has medium green broad, flat leaves and firm, gray bark. The bark may be marked in a sort of diamond pattern by shallow furrows and narrow ridges. This tree grows well in fairly rich, well drained to dry soils. It occurs with other hickories and with oaks, characteristically on hillsides and ridges. Pignut Hickory trees, as with other hickories, has wood that is tough and strong. The nuts of this particular hickory, unlike some of the others, are bitter and scarcely edible. The nuts they are an important food for squirrels and chipmunks and other wildlife. This shade tree turns a bright yellow for great fall color.

Spiraea - Frobeli
The Frobeli Spirea, Spiraea x bumalda, has new foliage that is purplish with bright pink to red early summer flowers. Vigorous grower with bright purplish-pink flowers in June-July. It has purplish tips on the foliage in spring. Leaves turn purple in fall for a striking color display. They will thrive in most locations. It is an upright, rounded shurb that is excellent as a small hedge, and when not in bloom, it is still an attractive neat plant.

Chinese Chestnut
The Chinese Chestnut, Castanea mollissima, can be used as a nut tree and a shade tree, or planted in rows as a windbreak. The nuts are sweet-flavored and produce edible nuts in winter. This deciduous tree has moderate water requirements and it has a moderate tolerance to salt and alkali soils. Landscapers plant the Chinese Chestnut as an ornamental. Chinese Chestnut trees do well in hot dry climates and are blight resistant. The foliage is dark green in summer. This hardy tree will bear fruit in 7-8 years when placed on a good site. The dark green leaves are 5?-8? in length with a simple shape that turn yellow and gold in the fall. It produces edible chestnuts after establishment. The outer shell of the nut is prickly and must be removed. This variety of chestnut is resistant to chestnut blight (but not immune). This tree tolerates heat, drought, transplanting, and dry and acidic soils.
