Walking Stick (corylus avellana 'contorta')
The Filbert or Hazelnut is generally grown for its tasty nuts, but not this one. 'Contorta", better known as the Walking Stick, has beautifully twisted and contorted weeping branches that are particularly striking when dusted with snow. In late winter, 2-3" long, yellowish brown catkins appear, dangling like ornaments from the wiry skeleton. In spring and summer and early autumn, it has large crinkly leaves so dense it hides the exaggerated corkscrew appearance of the limbs. Decideous. Keep outdoors. 12 years old. 18"x27"x29". Flowering Crabapple (malus sargenti)
Flowering Crabapples are one of the best flowering trees for bonsai. They produce beautiful 1/2" pink and red fragrant flowers covering the entire tree in early spring before the foliage appears. The foliage is small and lobed. Little green pomes (apples) appear in summer, derived from the enlargement of the entire flower receptacle which becomes fleshy. The fruit ripens to all different colors in the fall when the foliage begins to turn to shades of yellow, orange and red. Winter brings a nice twiggy skeletal outline punctuated by the fruit which persists throughout the winter. They are easy to grow and quite pest and disease resistant. Decideous.
