Barbados Cherry (Small) (malpighia Pendiculata)
Native to St. Croix, Trinidad and Curacao. The name (Malpighia÷is used to honor Marcello Malpighia (1628-1693). He was a distinguished naturalist in Bologna, Italy. The natural form of the Barbados Cherry is pendulous with weeping twigs and branches. The flowers are rose-pink, often several together in a cyme. Its fruit is small and edible. It has a weeping growth habit if the branches are allowed to elongate. The round edible fruits are borne singly or in 2s or 3s and are bright red with glossy skin. Jaboticaba (eugenia cauliflora)
Native to southern Brazil the Jaboticaba, pronounced in five (5) syllables just as it is spelled, is a member of the Myrtle family and relative of the Guava. The botanical name "Cauliflora" means that it flowers and bears fruit on the trunk and mature branches. During its flowering period the tree is covered in clusters of small white flowers all over the trunk and branches. These eventually develop into dark berries, which are sometimes sold in delicatessens. The kernels of the fruits can be grown as bonsai which make pretty indoor trees. Evergreen conifer with flat deep green fan-like foliage. Leaves edged with blue on the undersides. Pea-sized cones. Beautiful uncommon evergreen which is the smallest of the species.
