Hokkaido Elm (ulmus parvifolia 'hokkaido')
Native to Japan and Korea, the Hokkaido Elm is a Chinese Elm, not troubled by the Dutch Elm disease that has destroyed so many other species. It is extremely slow growing and will only grow to about 36" tall in nature. The Hokkaido forms a rugged trunk with a corky bark that flakes off in rounded plates. This cultivar of ulmus has the tiniest leaf of all Elms (only 3/8" long) and the are short-stalked, oval with a slightly pointed tip and toothed margins, bright green on the upper surface, lighter green underneath. Very nice fall color. Decideous. Temperate. Best to protect from frost. 40 years old. 21"x19"x25". Potted in a 16" ceramic green fluted oval container as shown. Trident Maple (Acer Buergerianum)
Well known for the superb colors of its foliage in autumn. The bark is a dappled pale brown and exfoliates with age revealing a grey, orange and brown color. The small leaves (which resist scorching during drought) have 3 short lobes close together - hence the name Tri-dent. The spring flowers are inconspicuous and the new growth is often bronze to purple. Very popular for bonsai because of the small handsome leaves. Decideous. This is the tree that we recommend if you are inexperienced with bonsai or you do not have a green thumb. In our opinion it is one of the easiest bonsai trees to care for.
